The Abbey Heritage Trail Walk was designed by the Lost Abbey Project Team and highlights the history of the Abbey, making it accessible to the public through interpretation boards which link the town’s main medieval abbey sites.
It begins at the Abbey Gateway (next to the Guildhall), taking in St Nicolas Church and then Roysse Court, before moving on to the old site of Abingdon School and St John’s Hospital in the town centre. The walk then proceeds to the Abbey Buildings, through the Abbey Gardens and along the millstream to finish at Barton Court ruins. Visitors can then choose to return the way they came or go over Abingdon weir and lock to walk back along the river bank to the bridge.
The Project team has produced a leaflet to illustrate the walk, and a copy can be obtained by clicking the picture on the left, or from the Information Centre. You can follow this trail yourself or join others at times such as the Heritage Weekend in September. Details of led walks will be publicised on the Forthcoming Events page.
